Our History
Est 1991. Spec Body Art was founded by Spec Ung, an ex-Singaporean Air Force Pilot.
After completing a 12-year contract with the air force in which he was assigned to the Clark Air Base in Philippines for service, Spec decided to set up the first Spec Body Art Tattoo studio in Angeles city, Philippines.
Nick named ‘SPEC’ for the large 80’s style spectacles he wore; his first customers were mainly his fellow comrades from the nearby Air Base. A year later Volcano Mount Pinatubo erupted and he was left with no choice but to shut down.
After this tragedy, he continued to pursue his art and made a name for himself traveling and featuring in studios across South East Asia.
In 2004 he decided to set roots in Malaysia and open a tattoo studio once again. This time in Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur where he continued his passion in tattoo and eventually taking on an apprentice, Ronny Needles.
Ronny quickly realized his passion for body piercings. Beginning with little experience, Ronny started to practice on his own clothing and eventually performed his very first piercing on Spec. He quickly filled the role of piercer and worked alongside Spec for many years. Sadly, in 2016 Spec was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and passed on in the same year.
With the rising demand of body piercing, Ronny has successfully carried on Spec’s legacy by expanding to a second location in Subang Jaya, where he continues to improve his skill and education in the art of body piercing by attending yearly courses held by the world recognized Association of Professional Piercer (APP).
His dream – “To be the first official APP member in South East Asia”
In April 2020, Ronny has finally earned that tittle. Until today, Ronny remains a strong advocate in safe and hygienic piercing and constantly educating customers on the importance of safe piercings. Spec Body Art continues to open its doors to all tattoo and piercing enthusiasts alike and treat each customer with care and honesty.
“I don’t care how much you know, until I know how much you care”
